Catherine Élise (Cate) Blanchett was born on 14th May, 1969 in Melbourne, Australia. She has earned international acclaim both as an actress and as a director. Her successes have merited her a whopping five Academy Award nominations between 1995 and 2010.
In addition to acting, Blanchett is involved in ecological issues and has served as the Australian Conservation Foundation’s ambassador for their on-line campaign entitled “whoonearthcares.com”. Blanchett, her husband (playwright/screenwriter Andrew Upton) and their three children reside in Australia.
Career Highlights
Blanchett has a penchant for appearing royal, or at least some of her most memorable roles have found her as a queen, first as Elizabeth I of England and then as Galadriel, the elvish queen in the “Lord of the Rings” series.
Her strengths as an actress seem to revolve around her sweet, but sophisticated sort of beauty and that commanding accent. She has played the gamut of roles, but her most memorable works are strong female parts with plenty of passionate lines.
If she has any weakness as an actress, Blanchett’s nemesis may be simple bad luck. Early on in her career, on more than one occasion, she simply did not land the part that would have given her that big boost towards stardom.
