Jennifer Lopez (J.Lo) was born in the Bronx, in New York City in 1969. At 51 years of age, she has established herself as an actress, a singer and a pop culture icon.
Born to a working class family, Jennifer put herself through acting/dance school and soon had small parts dancing in music videos.
Career Highlights
Jennifer Lopez film career did not take off until her part in the title role of the movie, “Selena”, in 1997. For her performance she was nominated for both Golden Globe and MTV Movie Awards and took home the ALMA Award for Best Actress.
In addition to a series of successful not so-critically acclaimed films, Jennifer Lopez has a successful recording career, too. While having undergone criticism for simply “playing” herself in almost any role, her work in “Selena” proves that Jennifer does have real, raw acting potential.
She does have a charm and vivacity on screen that makes her perfect for lead in romantic comedies and is a big draw in this sort of film.
Still, since she is typically cast in the sorts of roles where she does not actually need to dig deeper than “playing herself”; she has yet to prove that she can repeat a performance like the one in “Selena”.
Though she has never received a nomination for an Oscar, Jennifer Lopez has had several nominations for Golden Globe and MTV Movie Awards and has won two ALMA Awards plus an Artist For Amnesty award from Amnesty International at the Berlin Film Festival for her work in the film, “Bordertown”, in 2007.
