One by one, rivals began falling out of the title race like dominoes. First, Lyon, then Nice, and the last one to fail was PSG, who left the door open for Monaco to secure their eighth French title in the 37th round.
Guided by Mbappé and Colombian star Radamel Falcao, Monaco’s offense scored an impressive 107 goals in 38 matches, blowing past Paris Saint – Germain and Nice. The 107 goals were 24 more than the second-ranked team and 44 more than the third.

Monaco was by far the strongest team in the competition, but it did not have a single individuality that stood out from the squad. Falcao and Mbappé were magnificent in the attack, Bernardo Silva and company created the play, Bakayoko was a monster in the middle, Lemar, Sidibe, and Mendy contributed great play at each side, and Subasic was very solid at the goal.
For that, and also because of his vast talent, the best player of the 2016 – 2017 Ligue 1 was Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani. Playing in a star-studded PSG, he managed to stand out with his 35 goals, seven more than the second-ranked player (Alexander Lacazette) and 14 more than the third (Falcao).
Cavani took advantage of the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to be the main man in Unai Emery’s offense, and he carried the team to second place in the Ligue 1 and to a near-upset of Barcelona in the Champions League.
