Mark Richard Hamill was born on 25th September, 1951 in Concord, California (USA). Mark was born into a military family and lived all over the world before he turned to acting, majoring in Drama at Los Angeles City College.
Though he is now fairly old, and has been active in the profession since the early seventies, he doesn’t have a lot of films listed on his acting resume. Perhaps that is because Mark played one part all too well. The world fell in love with him as the valiant, noble and genuinely good, Luke Skywalker in the smash, “Star Wars” in 1977.
Career Highlights
He reprised the role of Luke Skywalker in all three of the original “Star Wars” films. After those three films, no one seemed to see Mark as anyone but Luke. He became so closely identified with the character that, after a few attempts at other films which did not work out, he left movies and went to the stage for a while and has since concentrated on voice over work for animation (film, television and video games).
Mark Hamill’s ability to act was never called into question. Even his critics had to admit that he was the ultimate victim of typecasting. His inability to land a decent part after “Star Wars” was a bit of a back handed compliment to how well he played his part in that series.
The “Star Wars” movies garnered awards for soundtrack, artistic merit and special effects, and Hamill’s co-star, Alec Guiness won an award for his supportive acting, Hamill himself was left out.
