Having just celebrated his 74th birthday, Sylvester Stallone can afford (quite literally) to sit back and smile at the impressive body of work he has amassed during his career. This US-Born actor, christened Sylvester Enzio Stallone, was born in New York City. His mother suffered a difficult birth with Sylvester, resulting in the use of dual forceps to assist in his delivery.
The trauma caused nerve paralysis in the child’s face, resulting in his very signature slurring of speech and drooping lip. Oddly, it was that combination of odd facial expression and less than distinct speech that made him such a natural to play tough guys like Rambo and Rocky.
While he’s not the most romantic actor, he does have the tough guy image down to a fine science. Stallone can go eye-to-eye with the best of filmdom’s bad-boys and hold his own. He plays no hold barred and yet, has been known to offer us a glimpse of that softer side that keeps female fans interested in his antics, too. While not a critically acclaimed actor, by any standards.
Stallone has starred in some films that had theatrical merit above the violence and bloodletting. He won The Stockholm International Film Festival Best Actor Award for his role in Copland. He also garnered the 2000 Razzie for Worst Actor of Century. Still, his lack of awards probably doesn’t bother Sly too much. After all, his box office receipts are more than enough consolation for anyone. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
