The name has been given to this lake because of its tear like shape. Ansoo in Urdu means ‘Tear drop’. This lake was discovered by Pakistan Air Force in 1993 before that even the locals didn’t know about the lake.
This is a high altitude lake located in Kaghan Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Ansoo Lake can be reached through a difficult trek via Lake Saif ul Mulook. The walk is tough and is recommended only for physically and mentally fit people. It takes more than 7 hours for a round trip and the trek is mostly covered with thick snow.
The best time of the year to trek on this route is around July 10th to August 15th. Horses can also be hired with a guide from Lake Saiful Mulook. Even then one has to cover at least 35 % of the distance by foot.
After reaching the Malika Parbat base camp the trek becomes very difficult as oxygen level is very low and one has to be careful and conscious as breathing becomes very difficult. Then comes an easy stretch with heart touching scenery.
The temperature drops and warm clothes should be worn to go any further. Ansoo Lake is almost 20 minutes from this point. The last stretch is again tiring but the view makes up for all the effort. Most of the time it is covered by clouds and looks very beautiful from the mountain top.
Ansoo Lake, considered one of the highest lakes of Himalayan Range, is at an elevation of 4,245meters above sea level. It has the depth of 31 feet (9.4 m). It is located near Malika Parbat of Himalayas which is the highest mountain in Kaghan Valley.
