Doherty has won gold in men’s doubles and mixed doubles at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris and men’s doubles at the 1908 Olympic Games held in London. R.F. Doherty was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1980 together with his brother.

Reginald “Reggie” or “R.F.” Frank Doherty was born on 14 October 1872 in Wimbledon Surrey is a British male tennis player and the older brother of Laurie Doherty. He was popularly known in the world of tennis as “R.F.” rather than “Reggie”.
Career
Reggie Doherty began tennis early in his life and as a boy, at Westminster School, he showed great potential as a tennis player. At the age of only 14, he won the boys’ singles title at an open Championship in Llandudno.
Doherty became educated at the University of Cambridge (Trinity Hall), where he played for the famous Cambridge University Lawn Tennis Club. In 1885 and 1895 he was part of the Cambridge team that went on to beat Oxford to win the Scottish and Essex championships.
Olympics
Doherty won the doubles title at the 1900 Olympic Games that were held in Paris but the gold medals were not given at the 1900 Games they were given later on. He also competed in the singles tournament in the same games and reached the semi-finals where he was scheduled to play against his brother.
Reggie withdrew from the match since the brothers refused to play each other before the final. He also won the mixed doubles title in the same Olympic games against the five-time Wimbledon champion Charlotte Cooper. Doherty didn’t take part in the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis. In the 1908 Olympics in London, Reggie again won the doubles title but this time up against compatriot George Hillyard.
