Fateh Ali Khan was born in the year 1935. He was and still is the most prominent singer of the genre Khayal in classical singing.
After the death of Amanat Ali Khan and his later his son Asad Amanat, the Patiala gharana shrank down to a minimum number. He started his singing career in 1945.
The new singers such as Shafqat Amanat Ali are a little more into pop as compared to classical singing and so Fateh Ali Khan is the last important and prominent figure of Patiala gharana. The title of Baray got glued with Fateh Ali after many other singers with the same name started entering the musical industry.
Fateh Ali Khan was the younger brother of Amanat Ali Khan. He had the same powerful voice and practiced in the very same style and way as compared to all members of the gharana. Both the brothers were trained by their father the legend, Akhtar Hussain Khain.
Akhtar himself was a very well-known classical singer along with being one of the favorites of the Maharaja of Patiala. Fateh Ali Khan’s grandfather was one of the founders of the Patiala gharana. This led to a very nice training for him and his elder brother.
Fateh Ali Khan sang a lot with his brother Amanat Ali. At the sudden death of his brother in 1947, Fateh got depressed for over a year and half. After that he joined Radio Pakistan as a supervisor. At a very young age of 14 Fateh Ali Khan got his breakthrough. After this, there was no turning back and he climbed up the stair of success quicker than ever.
In 1969, the president of Pakistan himself awarded both the brothers with Pride of Performance Medal. Fateh Ali Khan passed away on 4th January, 2017 at the age of 82 due to prolonged lung disease. He was also awarded Tamgha-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan.
