Robert John Downey, Jr. was born on 4th April, 1965 in Manhattan, NY, NY (USA) to actor, producer, Robert Downey, Sr. and wife Elsie Nee Ford. While Downey has struggled with substance abuse issues throughout his career, he finally managed to clean up his act and began landing big parts once more.
Other than his problems with drugs that eventually led to him being fired from his role in the highly successful television series “Ally McBeal” Downey’s work is solid. He has charm, and wit and an abundance of natural talent.
Career Highlights
Robert’s professional career began, needless to say, at age five. Since then we’ve seen him mature from his “Brat pack” roles in films like “Up the Academy” (produced by his dad) to earning his first Oscar nomination for his role for his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 film, “Chaplin”.
His role in the 2008 blockbuster movie, “Iron Man” in which Downey played the lead put him back on top as far as leading men. Subsequent hits such as “Tropic Thunder”, “Sherlock Holmes” and “Iron Man 2 and 3” mean, hopefully, that Downey is ready to live up to his potential. He has starred in the most recent number one movies in the world “Avengers: Endgame”.
His primary weakness was his inconsistency. Prolonged periods absent from working due to rehab stints have made it hard for us to see a straight, steady line of progress from Robert. However, he has now overcome his addiction and is living up to best of his potential as an actor.
While he is not lacking in nominations for his varied roles, Robert Downey, Jr. has only won a couple of major acting accolades, a BAFTA Best Leading Actor – Chaplin, 1992 and Saturn Award for Best Actor – Iron Man, 2008.
